Advent 2023
Welcome to Advent
Maybe that is a little overwhelming, a little exciting, or perhaps a little bit of all of it? The thing about this season is that God longs to bring us closer, no matter where we are in life or what circumstances we are in. We’re grateful to play a part in your season (even if it’s just over email!).
So let’s start with why and what advent means to us.
What is Advent?
Advent is the first season of the liturgical year, a season where we prepare to celebrate Jesus’ birth. Just like a wedding, there is preparation to be done before stepping into a feast.
What do we do during Advent?
The Catechism tells us: “The coming of God's Son to earth is an event of such immensity that God willed to prepare for it over centuries. He makes everything converge on Christ: all the rituals and sacrifices, figures and symbols of the "First Covenant". He announces him through the mouths of the prophets who succeeded one another in Israel. Moreover, he awakens in the hearts of the pagans a dim expectation of this coming.(...)
When the Church celebrates the liturgy of Advent each year, she makes present this ancient expectancy of the Messiah, for by sharing in the long preparation for the Savior's first coming, the faithful renew their ardent desire for his second coming. By celebrating the precursor's birth and martyrdom, the Church unites herself to his desire: ‘He must increase, but I must decrease.’ (CCC 522, 524)
